The Wallops Island 12 is a one man kayak. Unlike my other canoes it has a flatter bottom and should paddle more like a canoe than a kayak. (Tracking should not be as strong.) It also has the higher seating position instead of sitting kayak style.
The Wallops Island 12 is 12 feet long overall and maximum width is 29″. It has a Stability Factor of 100.
This boat was inspired by a little white water canoe I had in the shop installing replacement gunwales. This IS NOT a white water boat! But the more I looked at the little canoe the more the more I liked the size.
While I was working on the canoe I had a request to hold a canoe building class. Since Stonefly with the beautiful segmented gunwales is just to much work to build in a week long class with inexperienced woodworkers. I decided to design two new boats, a single and and tandem with single gunwale stringer and use thwarts to strengthen the gunwales instead.
